Children achieve adult-like sensory integration during stance at 12-years-old.

چکیده
This study examined balance control in children to determine at what age the integration of sensory information in unperturbed stance is comparable to that of adults. In addition, it examined whether overall performance was related to age, gender and specific physical characteristics, such as height, weight and body mass index (BMI). Seventy-four female and 80 male children between the ages of 6 and 12 years participated in the study, as well as 20 adults, aged 20-22 years. The Sensory Organization Test (SOT), a component of computerized dynamic posturography, was used to assess overall balance as well as the use of specific sensory information in maintaining stability. Analyses of variance revealed significant differences between equilibrium scores of 7- and 8-year-old and 11- and 12-year-old (p < .01), with only the 12-year-old participants achieving scores comparable to those of the adult group. A repeated-measures analysis of variance comparing the use of different sensory information across age and gender groups revealed that while all groups demonstrated mature use of somatosensory information, children under 11 did not use visual information as effectively as adults, and only the 12-year-old group demonstrated adult-like use of vestibular information. Correlational analyses revealed a moderate correlation between composite balance scores and age, r(152) = .38, p < .001, but poor correlations between the composite equilibrium score and height, weight and BMI (r < .13, p > .15). Multiple regression analysis revealed that while physical characteristics accounted for approximately 20% of the variability in the composite equilibrium score, age alone accounted for the largest single contribution to the variance (16%). These results support recent findings suggesting that children do not demonstrate adult-like use of sensory information prior to age 12 years.

Late Development of Cue Integration Is Linked to Sensory Fusion in Cortex
Adults optimize perceptual judgements by integrating different types of sensory information [1, 2]. This engages specialized neural circuits that fuse signals from the same [3-5] or different [6] modalities. Whereas young children can use sensory cues independently, adult-like precision gains from cue combination only emerge around ages 10 to 11 years [7-9]. Why does it take so long to make bes...

Background: This study was conducted to compare the effect of Pivotal Response treatment and sensory integration treatment in reducing the symptoms of male autistic children, including abnormal quality of social interactions, abnormal quality of communication and self-stimulatory behaviors. Methods: The clinical trial study was done on 36 boys with autism between 8-12 years’ old in pediatric re...
متن کاملChanges in sensory dominance during childhood: converging evidence from the colavita effect and the sound-induced flash illusion.
In human adults, visual dominance emerges in several multisensory tasks. In children, auditory dominance has been reported up to 4 years of age. To establish when sensory dominance changes during development, 41 children (6-7, 9-10, and 11-12 years) were tested on the Colavita task (Experiment 1) and 32 children (6-7, 9-10, and 11-12 years) were tested on the sound-induced flash illusion (Exper...
متن کاملEffect of head orientation on postural control during upright stance and forward lean.
Sensory feedback from the vestibular system and neck muscle stretch receptors is critical for the regulation of postural control. The postural relationship of the head to the trunk is a major factor determining the integration of sensory feedback and can be interfered with by varying head orientation. This study assessed how 60-s of standing with the head neutral, flexed, or extended impacted p...
متن کاملinvestigation of static Balance control in 4-6 years old children with using the Pediatric Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction for Balance (P-CTSIB)
Objectives: Undiagnosed balance disorders during childhood can negatively affect children’s functional abilities such as reading and school performance. The Pediatric Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction for Balance (P-CTSIB) reflects how children combine and use different sensory information to react to different conditions in the static balance. This study aimed to examine balance control in ...
